Russia has imposed a "partial ban" on Facebook
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, pro-Kremlin media outlets imposed restrictions on the accounts of the social networking site Facebook. Due to this, the Russian authorities have also imposed counter-restrictions on Facebook. As a result, the citizens of the country are facing problems in accessing Facebook.
Russia's state-run communications watchdog and regulator Roscommonadzor said on Friday (February 25th) that Facebook had banned its state news agency RIA Novosti, state TV channel Javazda and two pro-Kremlin news portals. Russia has called for the lifting of sanctions. But Facebook did not lift those restrictions. That is why Moscow has imposed counter-restrictions on Facebook. It will be effective from Friday.
Roscommonadzor said in a statement that the move was aimed at protecting the Russian media.
Russia's foreign ministry and the prosecutor general's office say Facebook violates the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens. Therefore, the ban has been in effect since February 25.
Nick Clegg, head of global affairs at Facebook's parent company Meta, said on Twitter that Russian authorities had ordered a halt to fact-checking on content published and disseminated in all four media outlets. But we have rejected it. As a result, they imposed restrictions on us.
